The
weather was warm (over 100 degrees in the shade) in Salt Lake City,
as the West Coast Pro Mod Association started off their 2007 season
at Rocky Mountain Raceway.
With nine cars vieing for a spot in the eight car field the teams
knew that they would have to bring their best as most teams in
attendance had new cars, with new engine combinations.
The 2007 WCPMA Champion Joe Delehay had his brand new Tim McAmis
1968 Camaro, Tim Vogt was driving a new 2007 Corvette, Bryon Mackey
had his new Willeys, WCPMA newcomer Mike Knowles with his 63’
Vette, and due to his dedication to the WCPMA series Vern Mills was
in a borrowed '91 Chev as his new car was not ready for competition
yet.
The race proved to take a toll on teams with the extreme heat
conditions and a corrected altitude of over 8000 ft as Joe Delehay
ripped a 6.553 @ 216.55 mph in the first pair of eliminations which
was good for the number one spot, Ross Hogenson followed in second
with a 6.664 @ 208.76 mph, and Trevor Lowe finished in third with a
6.689 @ 206.37 mph.
Final Qualifying Order:
1. Joe Delehay - 6.553 @ 216.55 mph
2. Ross Hogenson - 6.664 @ 208.76 mph
3. Trevor Lowe - 6.689 @ 206.37 mph
4. Dan Vogt - 6.761 @ 207.94 mph
5. Mike Knowles - 6.824 @ 207.18 mph
6. Tom Meheden - 6.893 @ 203.20 mph
7. Tim Vogt - 6.928 @ 205.38 mph
8. Bryon Mackey - 7.164 @ 201.74 mph
Did Not Qualify:
9. Vern Mills - 9.116 @ 159.17 mph
The First round of eliminations saw Joe Delehay (RT: .483 - 6.599 @
216.50 mph) defeat Bryon Mackey (Broke), Dan Vogt (RT: .819 - 6.766
@ 208.23 mph) defeat Mike Knowles (RT: .846 - 6.653 @ 214.33 mph),
Tim Vogt (RT: .819 - 6.827 @ 193.38 mph) defeat Ross Hogenson (RT:
.464 9.497 @ 107.51 mph), and Trevor Lowe (RT: .505 - 6.873 @ 195.39
mph) defeated the alternate Vern Mills (RT: .502 - 8.532 @ 129.92
mph) as Tom Meheden broke in the last round of qualifying.
An all Canadian semi-finals had Calgary’s Joe Delehay facing
Regina’s Dan Vogt, and British Columbia’s Trevor Lowe against
Regina’s Tim Vogt.
In the first pairing of the semi-finals Joe Delehay, who had been
running in the 6.50’s all weekend, and Dan Vogt, Vogt got the
holeshot with a .454 reaction time to Delehay’s .605 reaction
time. Delehay was chasing Vogt all the way down the track until
parts failure struck at about the 1/8th mile allowing Vogt to get
the win by half a car length. Vogt ran a 6.792 @ 206.99 mph to
Delehay’s quicker but losing 6.661 @ 211.81 mph.
The second pairing of the semi-finals saw another Nitrous vs. Blower
match up with Tim Vogt and Trevor Lowe. Lowe got the light with a
.452 reaction time against Tim Vogt’s .702 reaction time, but
Lowe’s 6.842 @ 211.06 mph just wasn’t enough as Vogt’s crowd
stunning 6.432 @ 217.42 mph was enough to pass Lowe just before the
finish line.
The final round of eliminations saw the Vogt-Snavely Team mates and
brothers Tim and Dan Vogt in what was a tense final round for the
first race of the 2007 season. Dan Vogt got the light with his .443
reaction time against brother Tim’s .632 reaction time and that
proved to be enough as his 6.726 @ 209.30 mph defeated Tim’s
sideways 7.54 @ 136.59 mph.
The WCPMA would like to thank the Salt Lake City Presenting Sponsor,
B and J transmissions (www.bandjtransmission.com),
as well as all the Rocky Mountain Raceway track personnel for the
exceptional track surface with the poor conditions of over 100
degrees all day and a corrected altitude of 8200 ft.
The West Coast Pro Mod teams are already preparing for their next
event June 30th-July 1st for the Eaton Presented “Fast and Furious
on The Fraser” at Mission Raceway Park, featuring a 16 car field
as well as the Jet Tools Quick 16 Lottery.
